Allergies And Bedding

If you have allergies, bedding may be a storehouse of allergens that trigger your symptoms. Allergies and bedding has been the subject of much research over the years and the levels of dust mite and, even in the cleanest home, cockroach allergen levels can easily induce asthma or allergies.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences found that high levels of dust mite and cockroach allergens where found when they collected samples by vacuuming areas in 831 different homes tested. Homes in 75 different areas of the United States were used for this research.

Researchers from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) discovered high levels of dust mite and cockroach allergens when they collected dust samples by vacuuming five or six different areas in each of the 831 homes tested. A full spectrum of ethnic and socioeconomic status as well as housing conditions was included in the study. Bedding samples and health information on each of the persons living in each home were also gathered.
The results of this research on allergies and bedding revealed that over 45 percent of the homes tested have dust mite allergen concentrations that are quite large, over 2 micrograms per gram of dust, certainly sufficient to trigger and allergy or asthma attack. Of those 45 percent, over 23 percent has concentrations that were extremely huge, over 10 micrograms per gram of dust. In home that had previously had cockroach infestations, even though they had been treated and no living insects were noted, had cockroach allergens in high levels as well.

What does this research mean to your allergies and bedding? If you have allergies that are aggravated during the night or if you have been diagnosed with dust mite or cockroach allergies, you should choose take measure to protect yourself.

Special bedding such as a dust mite-proof mattress cover and pillow covers can be used to reduce the contact significantly. Frequent laundering of bedding reduces the effects of these allergens as well. Removal of carpeting and heavy, thick draperies from the bedroom can reduce the amount of material that allergens can collect in and on and therefore reduce the impacts of your health.

Heavy comforters are a haven for dust and dust mite allergens. Using light blankets that are washed very often can help a great deal in reducing allergies triggered by allergens in the bedding.

You'll sleep much sounder when you take these precautions. Allergies and bedding go hand in hand so use the right bedding.
